The Chihuahua may be the smallest recognised dog breed, but its origins are steeped in rich history, cultural significance, and centuries of development. This remarkable little dog has journeyed from ancient temples to modern living room, and continues to capture hearts around the world.
The roots of the Chihuahua can be traced back to pre-Columbian Mexico, where small companion dogs were kept by the Toltec people as early as the 9th century. These dogs, known as Techichi, were slightly larger and less refined than today’s Chihuahua, but played a significant role in Toltec life — both as companions and in spiritual ceremonies.
The later Aztec civilisation adopted and revered these dogs, believing them to possess healing and protective qualities. Techichis were often buried with their owners to guide them through the afterlife, a testament to their importance in early Mesoamerican culture.
In the mid-1800s, American visitors travelling through the Mexican state of Chihuahua began acquiring small native dogs resembling the Techichi. These compact, alert little dogs gained popularity and were brought back to the United States, where they became known by the region they were found and the Chihuahua breed was born.
They were first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904, and their charm quickly spread across the globe. Chihuahuas were recognised by Dogs New Zealand in 1965 and continue to gain admirers worldwide, both in the pet world and the show ring.
Modern Chihuahuas are the result of generations of careful breeding to refine type, temperament, and conformation. Today, the breed comes in two coat varieties:
Both varieties appear in a wide array of colours and patterns, but share the same breed standard and qualities that define the Chihuahua — alert expression, compact structure, and spirited personality.
Throughout history, one thing has remained consistent: the Chihuahua's deep bond with its people. Originally kept as companions, they continue to thrive in that role today — affectionate, intelligent, and full of personality. Though small, they are fearless and loyal, often forming strong attachments with their family.
At AmigoReal, we honour the history of the breed by protecting its future. We believe in breeding with purpose — upholding correct type, sound structure, and good health. Our programme is guided by a passion for the breed’s heritage and a commitment to ensuring the Chihuahua continues to thrive as a joyful, enduring companion.
